The gold-to-silver ratio tells you how many ounces of silver it takes to buy one ounce of gold. It is calculated by dividing the gold spot price by the silver spot price. For example, if gold is $2,000/oz and silver is $25/oz, the ratio is 80:1 — meaning one ounce of gold equals 80 ounces of silver.
Precious-metal investors use the gold/silver ratio to decide when to rotate between metals. When the ratio is historically high (above 80), some traders buy silver — expecting it to outperform gold as the ratio reverts to its mean. When the ratio is low (below 50), gold may be the better relative value.
Over the past 20 years, the gold-to-silver ratio has averaged around 65:1. It spiked to roughly 120:1 in March 2020 during pandemic-driven market stress, and has historically dipped below 20:1 during silver bull markets. The ratio is not a timing tool by itself — it works best as one of several inputs in a broader precious-metals strategy.
